What You Need To Know
About Biodiesel Production
If you need an alternative to petroleum diesel then what you
are looking for is biodiesel. It is non-toxic, biodegradable,
safe and renewable.
It is made from vegetable and animal fats. Aside from being
used as fuel for diesel engines, it can also be used in boilers
and furnaces. It can be mixed with petroleum diesel or it can
be used as is, 100 percent biodiesel.
Biodiesel production is relatively simple. In fact, it is
easier than making beer. It is produced based on a process
called esterification. The oil and the fats are processed to
remove the water and other contaminants present in the mixture.
The pretreated oil and fats are mixed with alcohol and a
catalyst either sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide. It can
be made in any quantity. However, biodiesel production is
recommended to start out with small batches and work your way
up to big batches. Be careful though, especially if you have
plans of making it at home, as you will be handling extremely
volatile and flammable chemicals. There is always a risk for
personal and property damage. It is best to carefully study
biodiesel production before you start and that should include
precautionary measures and equipments that you will need to
protect yourself and those who will come in contact during its
production.
